Photon Matrix: The $988 Laser Mosquito Zapper That Finally Shipped

In July 2024, 70 people a month searched for "laser mosquito zapper" in the US. Twelve months later the term hit 12,100, its all-time high, and you could not buy one anywhere. The videos were real, the product was not. As of July 2026, with units finally going out the door, the term sits at 4,400.

That inversion is the story, and it is the part nobody ranking for this has. The demand peaked a full summer before the supply arrived, and it came back at roughly a third of its size. Meanwhile the idea itself is sixteen years old: a 2010 project funded by the Gates Foundation promised a 30-metre mosquito laser for about fifty dollars. What shipped in 2026 covers six metres and costs $988.

The search spike, in numbers

Here is the monthly curve. Read the year labels before the bars, because the tall one is not where you would expect.

The breakout is June 2025 and the peak is 12,100 in July 2025. At that point the device was a demo circulating as video. By the following winter the term had fallen back under a thousand. Then it climbed through the spring of 2026 and reached 4,400 in July, three consecutive monthly rises as pre-orders opened.

Seasonality on this term is classified HIGH, so summer against summer is the honest comparison, and summer 2026 is 64% below summer 2025. The product arrived after the audience had moved on, which is the most common way a crowdfunded gadget dies.

The category it is entering is not healthy either.

mosquito repellent draws 201,000 searches a month as of July 2026, 46 times the laser term. This is a spray-and-citronella market with a very expensive newcomer in the corner of it. But look at the direction of travel rather than the size.

Every traditional term is shrinking. Only the two device-shaped terms, the laser and the mosquito drone, are up over two years. The one conventional brand still growing is Biogents, up 184% year over year, and it sells a CO2 trap rather than a chemical.

What Photon Matrix actually is

It is a desk-sized box that scans a plane with LiDAR and fires a laser at anything that looks like a mosquito.

The product page is unusually specific for a crowdfunded device, which is a point in its favour. The numbers it publishes:

Two versions exist and the vendor is clear that they perform identically. The blue laser runs at 450 nm and is visible, recommended for outdoors because you can see it working. The infrared runs at 976 nm and is invisible, recommended for bedrooms.

The safety design is the part worth reading twice. In the company's own words on its homepage: "If the background is beyond the effective range or no solid background is detected, the laser is automatically disabled to ensure safety." The beam only fires when it has a solid backstop inside six metres. That is a sensible interlock, and it is also why the range is six metres rather than thirty.

Why people are searching for it

Because the video is extremely good. The device looks like a scale model of a missile defence system sitting on a nightstand, and clips of it dropping mosquitoes mid-air travel exactly as well as you would expect. This one from @ctorobotics is typical of what spread in August 2026.

The caption ends on the right question: "Would you put a laser mosquito defense system in your backyard?" The account also carries a disclaimer that it is a media platform and does not own the technology, which is more disclosure than most of the reposts managed.

The commercial story behind the videos is a crowdfunding campaign. An Indiegogo project by Jim Wong, based in Changzhou, is reported to have raised around $2.7 million from more than four thousand backers against a $20,000 goal, with early backers paying roughly $630 a unit. We could not read the campaign page directly, so treat those figures as reported rather than confirmed. The vendor's own site claims only "thousands of backers".

The 2010 promise, and what actually shipped

This is not a new idea. It is a sixteen-year-old idea that got cheap enough to sell.

In 2007 the Gates Foundation asked Intellectual Ventures to work on malaria. Lowell Wood, an astrophysicist who helped architect the Strategic Defense Initiative, suggested lasers, and by the following year the team was shooting mosquitoes down. The result was the Photonic Fence, demonstrated publicly in 2010: infrared LEDs across fence posts, cameras watching for shadows, a low-power ranging laser reading wingbeat frequency to identify species and even sex, then a kill laser. Only female mosquitoes bite, so the system could be told to ignore everything else.

Here is the comparison nobody has run.

The 2010 figures come from Wikipedia's account of the mosquito laser, which also records the outcome plainly: "a device that can kill mosquitoes at a long enough range to make it practical has never been implemented." Photon Matrix did not beat that problem. It shrank the problem until a product fit inside it.

Does it work? What the research says

There is peer-reviewed evidence for the underlying approach, and it is more modest than the marketing.

A 2024 paper in Scientific Reports, An optical system to detect, surveil, and kill flying insect vectors, tested a field-sized Photonic Fence, 30 metres long by 3 metres high, across 180 square metres of active space. Three findings matter here.

The kill rate is single digits. The researchers report that the laser "typically engaged 1-2 mosquitoes per second but could engage up to 7 targets per second." The "30 per second" number attached to the consumer device in coverage does not appear on the vendor's own site or spec sheet, and it is four times the peer-reviewed maximum for a far larger system.

It genuinely works on a population. With the laser engaged, under 1% of released Aedes aegypti reached the human side of the test enclosure, against 38% when the laser was silenced. That is a real effect, not a demo.

Selectivity is the strongest result. The system "tracked, but did not intercept the orchid bee." It was also noticeably worse at hitting the smaller Asian citrus psyllid, which tells you the size window is narrow. A device that only kills what you point it at is the entire argument against sprays.

What it means for the category

Chemical-free is the actual product. Our data shows the whole conventional category contracting: mosquito repellent down 45% over two years, mosquito killer down 87%. People are not buying fewer solutions, they are searching less for chemical ones. That fits the wider move toward devices over consumables that runs through our home appliance trends coverage.

Price has to fall by an order of magnitude. At $988 this competes with a screened porch, which is the comparison every buyer will make. At $99 it competes with a bug zapper and wins on noise, selectivity and not killing moths.

Regulators have not weighed in. A Class 4 diode in a consumer enclosure is a certification question, not a marketing one, and it is the most likely thing to delay Western retail availability.

What to watch next

Whether the curve beats last July. Our series ends at 4,400 for July 2026. If August and September come in above the 12,100 peak, shipping units created more demand than the videos did. Independent testing. Nobody outside the company has published a kill rate, a false-positive rate, or a safety measurement on a retail unit. The first teardown will matter more than any amount of footage, and the same standard applies here as to any hyped launch we cover, from home improvement gear to frontier AI.

Delivery. Pre-orders carry a 120-day window. Crowdfunded hardware usually slips, and the backer threads are where that shows up first. Watch whether the second summer of shipping arrives before the third summer of searches. The same test is running right now on the Beni camera robot, which raised a reported $4.1 million and promised October deliveries.

The honest read is that Photon Matrix is a genuinely clever product solving a real problem at the wrong price, sixteen years after the idea was promised at a twentieth of the cost. The search curve already voted once, in a summer when there was nothing to buy.
