Screen recorder grew 172 percent to 201,000 searches, a genuinely large volume worth noting. Custom trading cards and lego playstation also appeared as new searches this week, but with numbers this size we would not call any of it a sure thing yet.

We rebuilt this list on September 16, 2026 from our live trend database, the same feed that powers the table above. The headline: Valve's hardware story has moved from the Steam Machine to the Steam Frame headset, the Switch 2 launch wave has finished unwinding, and the Pokemon card economy is back at the top of the table. The fastest-growing cluster is not a game at all. It is the companion tools people keep open beside one, led by palworld map at 11x over three months. Every search-volume and growth figure below is pulled from that live data.

1. Daily Puzzle Games Outlast the Viral Clickers

The clicker and browser-game gold rush has kept draining. polytrack has fallen to 49,500 monthly searches as of August 2026, down -91% over three months, block blast has slipped to 368,000 at -45%, and spacebar clicker is down -91%. What holds its ground is the daily-puzzle habit. connections still commands 11.1 million monthly searches, wordle game is up +22% at 673,000, and waffle game has climbed +50% year over year to 673,000. The New York Times' newest puzzle arrived with its own hint economy attached: pips hint is a breakout at 201,000 searches, well ahead of pips game itself at 27,100.

The lesson of 2026 is that a one-off viral game spikes and fades, but a daily habit compounds. The games with staying power are the ones people return to every morning.

Why the Puzzle Habit Wins

Daily puzzles are winning because:

  • Retention beats novelty: A once-a-day ritual brings players back on a schedule that clicker games never build
  • Zero friction: Load the page, play in two minutes, share your score, no install or account
  • The NYT Games flywheel: Wordle, Connections, and now Pips cross-promote each other into a single habit loop
  • Built-in sharing: Emoji result grids turn every session into free distribution
  • Cross-generation appeal: Puzzle games pull in players far outside the traditional gaming demographic

What's Gaining Momentum

Waffle Game (673,000 searches, +50% YoY): A word puzzle on a waffle-shaped grid, and the fastest-growing of the big daily formats.

Adopt Me Values (450,000 searches, +124% YoY): Roblox's trading economy has its own search ecosystem, as players track pet values like a stock market.

Mahjong Set (201,000 searches, +122% YoY): The physical tile set is riding the same casual-puzzle wave as everything on a screen.

Pips Hint (201,000 searches, breakout): The Times' domino-logic puzzle landed with a daily hint habit already formed around it.

Imposter Game (135,000 searches, 13.6x YoY): Social-deduction formats keep finding new audiences long after the original hit faded.

Flip 7 Card Game (22,200 searches, +83% YoY): A push-your-luck card game crossing from the tabletop into everyday search.

The audio version of the same habit is climbing too: Songless Unlimited is up +402% year over year to 33,100 monthly searches, and the word "unlimited" is doing the same work there that it does for Wordle.

Key Players

  • NYT Games helped build the daily-puzzle habit with Wordle, Connections, and Pips
  • CrazyGames remains the leading browser gaming platform
  • Poki is another major destination for instant browser play
  • Roblox powers a trading economy with its own search demand

2. PC Hardware: Valve's Steam Machine Steals the Show

The biggest hardware story of 2026 is still Valve's return to the living room, but the centre of the reveal has moved. The steam frame headset is now the breakout of the group at 301,000 monthly searches, up +174% over the past three months, while the steam machine holds 450,000 and the steam controller has settled back to 110,000 after its reveal spike, down -45% over three months. The software half counts too: steamos linux is up +174% over three months at 33,100 as buyers work out what actually runs on it. Component demand follows the same cycle, with ddr5 ram at 74,000 (+233% year over year) and oled monitor at 60,500 (+49%).

After a decade away, Valve is betting on the living room again, and search interest suggests the market has been waiting for it.

Why Hardware Searches Are Surging

PC gaming hardware is trending because:

  • Valve is back in hardware: The Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller reveal reignited the console-versus-PC conversation. The headset half of it, the Steam Frame, is the breakout on our VR and AR trends page.
  • Handheld PCs went mainstream: The Steam Deck proved the form factor, and a wave of competitors followed
  • DDR5 is now the default: New builds standardize on DDR5, driving mass upgrade research
  • AI and creation workloads: Gamers increasingly need GPU power for AI tools and content creation, not just frames
  • The OS is part of the pitch: SteamOS searches show buyers checking compatibility before they check specs

What's Gaining Momentum

Steam Machine (450,000 searches, 68.2x YoY): Valve's console-style PC for the TV is still the volume leader of its 2026 hardware push.

Steam Frame (301,000 searches, breakout): The headset half of the reveal is the fastest riser in Valve's lineup, up +174% in three months.

Portable Gaming Computer (135,000 searches, breakout): The generic handheld-PC query has broken out from nothing as the category fills with options.

Steam Controller (110,000 searches, +508% YoY): The redesigned controller is up five-fold on the year even after giving back its reveal spike.

DDR5 RAM (74,000 searches, +233% YoY): Now the default memory standard on new builds, driving steady research demand.

SteamOS Linux (33,100 searches, +174% over three months): Valve's operating system has become a search in its own right, separate from the hardware it ships on.

Key Players

  • NVIDIA still sets the pace on GPU performance
  • Valve re-entered hardware with the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller
  • AMD powers most handheld PCs and competes across CPUs and GPUs
  • ASUS ROG brought Windows handheld gaming mainstream with the ROG Ally

3. Handhelds Enter the Switch 2 Era

The Switch 2 is more than a year past launch, and the search curve shows it. nintendo switch 2 still pulls 1 million monthly searches, but it is down -64% year over year as the launch wave finishes unwinding, with switch 2 at 673,000 on the same path and nintendo switch oled down to 74,000.

The growth has moved to the edges of the category. handheld pc gaming is a breakout at 33,100 searches, handheld retro gaming console is up +124% over three months at 40,500, and Android-powered handhelds like the ayn thor have arrived from nothing at 301,000 searches. The steam deck holds flat at 550,000, with accessory demand climbing behind it: steam deck docking station is up +241% over three months.

Portable gaming is no longer a single-device story. The Switch 2 still sets the floor while a maturing handheld-PC market fills in every price point above and below it, and the newest volume is arriving from names nobody was tracking a year ago.

Why Handhelds Keep Growing

Handheld gaming is surging because:

  • The Switch 2 set the floor: A year past launch it is still a million-search term even as the launch spike unwinds
  • The Steam Deck proved the category: Valve showed people will pay for portable PC gaming, and demand never cooled
  • Handheld PCs matured: ROG Ally, Legion Go, and MSI Claw turned a niche into a competitive segment
  • New entrants widen the field: Android handhelds like the AYN Thor push the category into new price and power tiers
  • Emulation and retro stay strong: Adults with disposable income keep buying devices to replay classics legally

What's Gaining Momentum

AYN Thor (301,000 searches, breakout): An Android-powered handheld that arrived from nothing, and the clearest sign the market is expanding past the established names.

Handheld Retro Gaming Console (40,500 searches, +124% over three months): Emulation-friendly handhelds are the quiet growth end of the category.

Handheld PC Gaming (33,100 searches, breakout): The comparison query has broken out as the list of Steam Deck rivals gets long enough to need one.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort (22,200 searches, breakout): A first-party revival generating its own search spike on the new hardware.

Pokemon Switch (22,200 searches, +23% YoY): The franchise is still the main reason people search for Nintendo hardware at all.

Steam Deck Docking Station (9,900 searches, +241% over three months): Accessory demand is what an installed base looks like once it settles in.

Key Players

  • Nintendo anchors the mainstream with the Switch 2 and the older Switch OLED
  • Valve (Steam Deck) proved PC gaming works in portable form
  • ASUS ROG competes at the premium end with the ROG Ally
  • AYN widens the field with Android-powered handhelds

4. Simulation and the Rise of the Game Maker

Sim racing has kept cooling: 3d tuning is down -55% year over year and simulation racing is flat at 33,100 searches. The louder signal now is people wanting to make and broadcast games, not only play them. screen recorder leads that toolkit at 201,000 monthly searches (+172%), game development is up 30.7x year over year at 135,000, and ai character generator has climbed +643% over three months to 110,000. The broadcast side is breaking out alongside it, with streaming game up 25x over three months at 40,500 and live streaming app up +402% at 33,100. Sandbox and strategy formats carry the play side: pirate game holds 301,000 searches (+82%) and super troop is up +123% at 301,000.

The line between playing, making, and broadcasting is gone. Free engines, AI-assisted tools, and creator payouts have turned "I want to build a game" into a mainstream search, and the recording and streaming queries sit right next to it.

Why Creation Is the New Consumption

Game-making interest is surging because:

  • The tools went free and powerful: Unreal, Unity, and Godot put professional engines in anyone's hands
  • AI-assisted development lowered the bar: Asset generation and code help make solo game-building realistic
  • Creator economies pay out: Roblox and Fortnite creator programs turn sandbox building into income
  • Streaming inspires builders: Watching devlogs and playtests pushes viewers to try making their own
  • Recording is step one: Screen recorder and streaming-app searches are where most creator journeys actually start

What's Gaining Momentum

Super Troop (301,000 searches, +123% YoY): A strategy format pulling serious volume without a blockbuster budget behind it.

Screen Recorder (201,000 searches, +172% YoY): The entry point to every clip, devlog, and highlight reel, and it is growing faster than most games here.

Game Development (135,000 searches, 30.7x YoY): Searches around learning to build games have climbed from a standing start as the tools went free and good.

AI Character Generator (110,000 searches, +643% over three months): Asset generation has moved from novelty to a standard step in a solo developer's pipeline.

Deck Builder (90,500 searches, +83% over three months): Deckbuilding mechanics keep spreading into genres that never used cards.

Cobblemon (60,500 searches, +49% YoY): A community-built Minecraft mod with the search footprint of a shipped game.

Key Players

  • Unity remains a default engine for indie and mobile creators
  • Epic Games (Unreal) powers high-end development and the next engine cycle
  • Roblox turns sandbox creation into a paid creator economy
  • Godot is the fast-growing free and open-source alternative

5. Trading Cards and Live Economies Take Over Esports

The competitive-gaming economy still has Pokemon at its centre. pokemon card sits at 823,000 monthly searches, up +22% year over year, and the franchise's thirtieth anniversary is generating demand of its own: pokemon 30th anniversary pre order is a breakout at 49,500 searches, up more than 150x over three months. Around it, pokemon go webstore is up +234% over three months at 60,500 and lego pokemon is up +234% year over year at 60,500, while new sets spike on release, from perfect order chase cards at 40,500 to ascended heroes card list at 49,500. On the PC side deadlock holds 165,000 (+233%) with deadlock ranks at 40,500 (+514%), and cs float is flat at 33,100, a sign the skin economy has matured rather than grown.

Whether the currency is a graded card or a weapon skin, players are treating game items like assets, and the search behavior around values, floats, and rarity proves it.

Why Game Economies Keep Growing

Card and skin economies are trending because:

  • Pokemon TCG went mainstream again: Cards are collected, graded, and traded like investments, with prices tracked obsessively
  • Scarcity drives search: Chase cards, anniversary print runs, and low-float skins create constant value-checking behavior
  • Deadlock built a new ladder: Valve's competitive shooter gave players a fresh ranking system to climb
  • Skin markets stayed liquid: CS float and market searches show item trading remains a durable economy
  • Streaming fuels the loop: Card openings and rank grinds are a content genre unto themselves

What's Gaining Momentum

Pokemon Card (823,000 searches, +22% YoY): One of gaming's largest search terms, driven by collecting, grading, and investment interest. The collecting habit behind it is a section of its own in activities and hobbies trends.

Lego Pokemon (60,500 searches, +234% YoY): The crossover line is pulling franchise demand into a second collectible category entirely.

Pokemon Go Webstore (60,500 searches, +234% over three months): Buying direct from the publisher is becoming its own habit alongside the game.

Pokemon 30th Anniversary Pre Order (49,500 searches, breakout): Anniversary product is front-running its own release by months.

Deadlock Ranks (40,500 searches, +514% YoY): Valve's newest competitive game has players studying its ranking ladder in detail.

Mega Evolution ETB (27,100 searches, +83% YoY): New Pokemon TCG sets generate their own search spikes on release.

Key Players

  • The Pokemon Company sits at the center of the trading-card boom
  • Valve runs Deadlock, the Steam Market, and the CS skin economy
  • Riot Games keeps a major footprint in competitive PC gaming

6. The Tools People Keep Open Beside the Game

The fastest-growing cluster in this table is not a game. It is the tab people keep open next to one. palworld map is up 11x over the past three months to 368,000 monthly searches, and its sibling pal breeding calculator has climbed to 60,500 with +817% growth over six months. Trading tools show the same shape: poe2 trade is up +814% over three months at 74,000, with the spaced variant poe 2 trade at 40,500 and poe ninja holding 165,000. Elsewhere it is generators and managers, from catan board generator at 33,100 (+83%) to deadlock mod manager, a breakout at 27,100. The platforms underneath them are steady rather than spiking, with modrinth at 246,000 (+82%) and nexus mods flat at 550,000.

These are second-screen searches, and they behave differently from game searches. They spike when a game patches rather than when it launches, and they keep a title's search footprint alive long after its release week is over.

Why Companion Tools Are Growing

Companion tools are trending because:

  • Games shipped without them: Maps, breeding tables, and trade indexes are things players built for each other
  • Live updates reset the need: Every patch and new region sends players back to the same tool
  • Two screens are normal: A phone in hand while the game runs is now the default way to play a deep title
  • Trading needs pricing: Any economy with rarity produces a search habit around what things are worth
  • Mods went mainstream: Managers and platforms turned modding from a hobby into an install step

What's Gaining Momentum

Palworld Map (368,000 searches, +307% YoY): The interactive map is searched more than most of the games in this table, and it is up 11x in three months.

Poe2 Trade (74,000 searches, +814% over three months): Path of Exile 2's trade index is the front door to the whole economy.

Pal Breeding Calculator (60,500 searches, +647% YoY): A community-built breeding table that has become part of how the game is actually played.

Poe 2 Trade (40,500 searches, +400% YoY): The spaced spelling pulls its own volume, which tells you how often the tool gets typed.

Catan Board Generator (33,100 searches, +83% YoY): Even tabletop games now have a setup tool people look up by name.

Deadlock Mod Manager (27,100 searches, breakout): Mod management is arriving alongside a competitive game rather than years after it.

Key Players

  • paldb.cc is the fan database behind the Palworld map and breeding calculator searches
  • poe.ninja tracks the Path of Exile economy independently of the developer
  • Grinding Gear Games runs the Path of Exile 2 economy that the trade tools index
  • Modrinth hosts the open mod ecosystem many of these tools plug into

7. The Releases Everyone Is Searching For

Anticipation is where the fastest growth lives, and this quarter it points backwards as much as forwards. black ops 1 and 2 ps5 is the single biggest breakout in the table at 201,000 monthly searches, a remaster query that did not exist a year ago. resident evil requiem holds 135,000 (+308% year over year) though it has cooled -63% over three months as the reveal cycle passes, and pokemon champions matches it at 135,000 (+82%). Nintendo's pokemon pokopia is a breakout at 49,500, alongside windrose at the same volume (+234%). The question beyond this console generation is already live: playstation 6 and ps6 each pull 368,000 searches.

Search spikes now front-run launches by months. The questions players ask before a game ships, especially about cross-platform play, are a live read on what will actually sell.

Why Anticipation Drives Search

Upcoming releases are surging because:

  • Reveal cycles are search events: Summer Game Fest and publisher showcases turn announcements into overnight search spikes
  • Cross-platform is the first question: "Is it cross platform" queries dominate pre-launch interest and signal group buying intent
  • Remaster nostalgia converts: Bringing classics like Black Ops to current consoles taps proven demand
  • Console questions start early: PlayStation 6 searches are already running at scale with nothing shipped to search for
  • Wishlists start with a search: Pre-launch research is where purchase intent is formed

What's Gaining Momentum

Black Ops 1 and 2 PS5 (201,000 searches, breakout): A remaster query that went from nothing to the biggest breakout in the table, proving nostalgia converts to current hardware.

Resident Evil Requiem (135,000 searches, +308% YoY): Capcom's next horror entry still carries heavy pre-launch search a year on from its reveal.

Pokemon Champions (135,000 searches, +82% YoY): The competitive Pokemon title has an anticipation curve of its own ahead of release.

Pokemon Pokopia (49,500 searches, breakout): Nintendo's life-sim spin-off arrived in search from a standing start.

Windrose (49,500 searches, +234% YoY): A smaller release showing anticipation is not only a blockbuster effect.

Is Subnautica 2 Cross Platform (6,600 searches, +247% over three months): The cross-platform question is still the first thing players ask before a co-op launch.

Key Players

  • Capcom drives horror hype with Resident Evil Requiem
  • Krafton (Unknown Worlds) owns the Subnautica 2 momentum
  • Sony carries the next-console question before it has announced anything
  • Activision taps nostalgia with Black Ops remasters

Ownership is becoming the anxiety on the digital side too. Microsoft's disc-to-digital feature drew 14,800 searches in July 2026, a month before it was announced. Our Xbox disc to digital breakdown covers what you actually own after you convert.

Summary

The gaming landscape of 2026 has shifted under last year's leaders. Whether players are keeping a daily streak in Connections (11,100,000 searches), waiting on Valve's Steam Frame (301,000 searches), watching the Nintendo Switch 2 curve come back down (1,000,000 searches), learning to build games themselves (Game Development, 135,000 searches), pricing Pokemon Card singles (823,000 searches), or keeping a Palworld Map (368,000 searches) open on a second screen, the common thread is durability. The trends that last are habits, ecosystems, and tools, not one-off viral spikes.

The winning trends in gaming now share these characteristics:

  • Daily habits that compound retention instead of spiking and fading
  • Ecosystem gravity, where one product pulls demand toward the rest of a platform
  • Real economies in which cards and skins are treated like assets
  • Creation and companion tools, as making things around a game goes mainstream
  • Pre-launch search that front-runs and predicts what will actually sell

For entrepreneurs and investors, the data points to several high-growth opportunities: companion tools and trade indexes for live-service games, daily-puzzle and habit-loop formats, handheld PC accessories, Pokemon-adjacent collectibles, and content that answers pre-launch questions for the year's biggest releases.
