Car Trends in 2026: What Drivers Are Actually Searching For
The biggest car trend of 2026 is not a car. "Electric bike" pulls 1,830,000 monthly searches as of August 2026, more than any vehicle on this page, and "e scooter" adds another 823,000. Below them, the car searches that grew fastest all have a name and a price attached: "rivian r2" is up +235% in a year at 368,000 searches, the "kia ev3" and "bmw ix3" are both up +309%, and "tesla cybercab" is up roughly 20x. People are not searching for "the future of mobility". They are searching for the specific thing they might buy, ride or hail next.
The other half of the story is cost. Searches for "cheap ebike", "used electric vehicles" and "plugin prius" are all climbing, and the battery chemistry that makes cheaper EVs possible, "lfp battery", is up +309% over the year. Here is how the search demand breaks down by theme.

Monthly searches as of August 2026, from the Rising Trends database. Growth is year over year.
We rebuilt this list on October 12, 2026 from our live trend database, the same feed that powers the table above. This first rebuild of the page sorts the 40 fastest-rising auto searches into six groups: two-wheelers, new electric models, hybrids and nameplates, driverless rides, batteries and charging, and the business of buying a car. Every search volume and growth figure below comes from that data.
1. E-Bikes and Scooters Are the Biggest Vehicles on the List
Two-wheelers dominate this category on raw volume. "Electric bike" sits at 1,830,000 monthly searches as of August 2026, up +22% year over year and up +122% over six months as riding season peaked. "E scooter" follows the same curve at 823,000 searches, up +22% in a year and +124% in six months. Both were flat over the last three months, which is what a summer peak looks like once it has arrived.

The shape of the demand matters more than the size. Buyers are shopping on price: "affordable electric bike" and "cheap ebike" each pull 110,000 searches, up +22% in a year. They are also shopping by model, with "lectric xp4" up +124% at 27,100 searches and the "happyrun g300 pro" up +235% at 18,100. Smaller formats are growing too: "mini electric bike" (14,800 searches) and "etrike" (27,100 searches) both rose +124% over six months.
Why E-Bikes Keep Growing
Two-wheel electric demand is rising because:
Price is falling: Budget models have made an e-bike a sub-car purchase for commuters and students
Named models: Shoppers now compare specific bikes the way they compare phones
New formats: Trikes and mini bikes bring in riders who would never buy a road bike
Replacement parts: An installed base creates its own searches, like batteries and chargers
Short trips: Scooters and e-bikes cover the errands that used to need a second car
What's Gaining Momentum
Electric Bike (1,830,000 searches, +22% YoY): The single largest search in this category, with a strong summer peak on top of steady annual growth.
E Scooter (823,000 searches, +22% YoY): Stand-up scooters track e-bikes almost exactly, a sign the same buyers are comparing both.
Cheap Ebike (110,000 searches, +22% YoY): Price-first shopping, with a +82% jump over six months.
Lectric XP4 (27,100 searches, +124% YoY): A named folding model pulling its own search demand, separate from the brand.
HappyRun G300 Pro (18,100 searches, +235% YoY): A fat-tire budget model that more than tripled its searches in a year.
E Bike Battery (18,100 searches, +22% YoY): The aftermarket that follows every boom in owned devices.
Key Players
Lectric eBikes: The brand behind the XP line, with 90,500 monthly searches and +50% growth in a year
Guardian Bike: Kids' bike maker whose searches rose +83% over six months
HappyRun: Budget fat-tire e-bike brand riding the price-first wave
2. New Electric Models People Are Searching by Name
The EV searches that grew this year are not about EVs in general. Generic "electric vehicles" is down -18% year over year at 165,000 searches, and "electric cars" is down -33%. Model names are going the other way. "Rivian r2" is up +235% at 368,000 monthly searches as of August 2026, more than double the generic term.
Rivian R2
368KVolume
2164x5Y
Kia Ev3
50KVolume
2474x5Y
The pattern repeats across brands. The "kia ev3", a compact electric SUV, is up +309% in a year at 49,500 searches, and up +511% over six months. The "bmw ix3" is up +309% at 74,000 searches. The "polestar 4" is up +173% at 49,500. At the top end, "electric ferrari" grew about 11x in a year to 33,100 searches after Ferrari showed its first fully electric car, then fell -84% in three months once the news cycle moved on.
Why Named EVs Are Rising
Model-level demand is growing because:
Smaller and cheaper: The R2 and EV3 aim at buyers priced out of the first EV wave
European arrivals: New BMW and Polestar models give shoppers fresh options to research
Reveal spikes: Supercar and concept reveals create sharp, short search peaks
Real comparison shopping: People search a model when they are close to buying, not when they are curious
Generic fatigue: Broad EV terms are slipping as the category becomes ordinary
What's Gaining Momentum
Rivian R2 (368,000 searches, +235% YoY): Rivian's smaller SUV is the biggest single car model on this page.
BMW iX3 (74,000 searches, +309% YoY): BMW's new electric SUV quadrupled its search demand in a year.
Kia EV3 (49,500 searches, +309% YoY): The fastest grower over six months among mainstream EVs, at +511%.
Polestar 4 (49,500 searches, +173% YoY): A coupe-styled electric SUV that kept growing through the year.
Electric Ferrari (33,100 searches, about 11x YoY): A reveal-driven spike that has already cooled sharply.
Volkswagen Tukan (27,100 searches, breakout): A nameplate with almost no search history a year ago, up about 14x in six months alone.
Key Players
Rivian: 823,000 monthly searches for the brand, flat year over year while its new model surges
Polestar: 135,000 brand searches, down -18% in a year even as the Polestar 4 climbs
BYD: 110,000 brand searches, up +22% over six months
3. Hybrids, Gas Fixes and the SUVs That Still Sell
Not everyone is going fully electric. "Plugin prius" is up +124% year over year at 27,100 monthly searches as of August 2026, and up +235% over six months. "Hybrid vehicle" is up +49% at 14,800 searches. In the wider pool, "toyota rav4 hybrid" pulls 301,000 searches, up +22%. The middle ground between gas and electric is where a lot of real shopping happens.

The biggest conventional nameplate on the table is the "lincoln nautilus", a midsize luxury SUV at 165,000 searches, up +22% in a year and +50% over six months. Fuel itself is a search topic too: "e15 gas", the higher-ethanol blend sold at some pumps, is up +49% at 14,800 searches, though it fell -63% in the last three months after an early-summer spike. If you want the longer story on the range-extender middle ground, our piece on the EREV vehicles trend covers why it keeps coming back.
Why Hybrids Are Holding On
Hybrids and familiar nameplates stay strong because:
No charging needed: Plug-in hybrids give an electric commute without range worry
Known names: The Prius and RAV4 carry decades of trust into a new drivetrain
SUV loyalty: Midsize and luxury SUVs keep their buyers whatever the powertrain
Fuel price sensitivity: Searches like e15 gas spike whenever pump prices move
Cheaper trucks: A wave of lower-priced electric pickups is pulling buyers back into research mode
What's Gaining Momentum
Lincoln Nautilus (165,000 searches, +22% YoY): The largest conventional SUV search on the table, with growth accelerating over six months.
Plugin Prius (27,100 searches, +124% YoY): The plug-in hybrid version of the best-known hybrid more than doubled in a year.
Hybrid Vehicle (14,800 searches, +49% YoY): The generic hybrid term is growing while the generic EV terms shrink.
E15 Gas (14,800 searches, +49% YoY): A seasonal fuel search that rises in summer and drops in autumn.
Honda Prelude (246,000 searches, +49% YoY): A revived nameplate that turned nostalgia into a search spike.
Key Players
Toyota: Owns the hybrid conversation, with the RAV4 Hybrid at 301,000 monthly searches
Slate: The low-cost electric pickup, at 368,000 searches and +83% in a year (our Slate EV breakdown has the full story)
Honda: The Prelude return is lifting a brand whose overall searches fell -18% in a year
4. Robotaxis, Self-Driving and Flying Cars
The fastest growth on this page belongs to cars nobody drives. "Tesla cybercab", the two-seat robotaxi without a steering wheel, grew roughly 20x in a year to 110,000 monthly searches as of August 2026, and is still up +122% in the last three months. The generic "robo taxi" is up +49% at 60,500 searches. "Tesla's autopilot" is up +234% in a year at 60,500, and up +309% over three months.

The broad term is cooling while the named services grow. "Self driving cars" is up +22% in a year at 18,100 searches but down -18% over six months. Meanwhile "waymo" pulls 450,000 searches, up +22%, and "zoox" is up +82% at 110,000. Above the road, "flying cars" holds 74,000 searches, up +22%, "evtol" is up +83% over six months at 22,200, and "air taxi" is up +174% in a year at 14,800. Even the human version of being driven is growing: "chauffeur service" is up +22% at 49,500 searches.
Why Driverless Rides Are Rising
Autonomy searches are growing because:
Real services: Robotaxis now run in several cities, so people search to book, not to wonder
Product reveals: A purpose-built robotaxi gives the idea a physical shape to search for
Driver assistance scrutiny: Autopilot searches spike around updates, recalls and crash coverage
Air taxi milestones: Electric aircraft certification news keeps eVTOL in the headlines
Paying to be driven: Chauffeur and ride services grow alongside the driverless pitch
What's Gaining Momentum
Tesla Cybercab (110,000 searches, about 20x YoY): The fastest-growing car search on the table, and still accelerating.
Robo Taxi (60,500 searches, +49% YoY): The generic robotaxi term is up +83% over six months.
Tesla's Autopilot (60,500 searches, +234% YoY): Driver-assistance interest more than tripled in a year.
Flying Cars (74,000 searches, +22% YoY): A durable search base that grows between milestones.
Evtol (22,200 searches, +23% YoY): The industry name for electric air taxis, up +50% over three months.
Air Taxi (14,800 searches, +174% YoY): The consumer-facing version of the same idea, growing faster.
Key Players
Waymo: The robotaxi service people search by name, at 450,000 monthly searches
Zoox: Amazon-owned robotaxi maker, up +82% in a year to 110,000 searches
Uber: Ride searches at 550,000 a month, up +22%, as it partners on autonomous rides
5. Batteries and Charging: The Cheaper-EV Chemistry
The technology behind cheaper EVs is now a consumer search. "Lfp battery", short for lithium iron phosphate, is up +309% year over year at 40,500 monthly searches as of August 2026, and up +650% over six months. "Sodium ion battery" is up +83% at 27,100 searches. Both chemistries trade a little range for a lower price and a longer life, which is exactly what the budget models in sections 1 and 2 need.

Charging is splitting into speed and coverage. "Fast charging" is up +22% at 27,100 searches. The broad "ev charging station" is far bigger at 823,000 searches but down -18% in a year, the same generic-term fatigue seen in section 2. "Nevada gigafactory" is up +49% at 40,500, as battery and truck production there stays in the news.
Why Battery Searches Are Rising
Battery and charging interest is growing because:
Cheaper chemistry: LFP packs have moved into mainstream EVs and home storage
Sodium arrives: The first sodium-ion products give buyers a new term to look up
Charging speed: Drivers now compare how fast a car charges, not just how far it goes
Factory news: Big battery plants draw searches from job seekers and investors alike
Two-wheel spillover: E-bike owners search batteries too, adding to the pool
What's Gaining Momentum
LFP Battery (40,500 searches, +309% YoY): The fastest-growing battery search, up +400% in the past three months alone.
Sodium Ion Battery (27,100 searches, +83% YoY): A newer chemistry growing +50% over both three and six months.
Fast Charging (27,100 searches, +22% YoY): Speed is becoming a buying criterion of its own.
Charging Station (165,000 searches, -18% YoY): Down over the year but up +50% over six months, a summer road-trip pattern.
Key Players
ChargePoint: 110,000 monthly searches, up +22% over six months
Electrify America: 165,000 searches but down -45% in a year, the clearest decline in charging
BYD: The best-known maker of LFP-based EVs, with its car searches up +22% in a year
6. Buying, Owning and the China Question
The way people buy and keep cars is changing as fast as the cars. "Used electric vehicles" is up +517% year over year at 14,800 monthly searches as of August 2026, as the first big wave of leased EVs comes back to market. "Ev dealership" grew about 25x in a year to 22,200 searches. The big used-car platforms remain the largest names in the whole category: "carvana" and "carmax" each pull 4,090,000 searches.

China is a search topic in itself. "Chinese electric cars", "china electric cars" and "chinese automakers" are all up +22% in a year, at 18,100, 18,100 and 14,800 searches, though all three fell -55% over the past three months. Labor is in the mix too: "uaw" is up +50% at 27,100 searches. Ownership searches are getting more practical, with "mobile repair truck" up +50% at 18,100 and "rotating car seat", the swivel child seat parents search for, up +22% at 33,100. A "cafe racer motorbike" search has broken out from almost nothing, now at 18,100 and up +174% over three months.
Why Ownership Searches Are Rising
Buying and ownership searches are growing because:
Used EV supply: Lease returns are making electric cars affordable second-hand
New sales channels: EV-only dealers and online platforms change where people shop
Import curiosity: Chinese brands are cheap, well reviewed and mostly unavailable in the US
Labor and pricing: Union contracts shape what new cars cost and where they are built
Service at home: Mobile repair brings maintenance to the driveway
What's Gaining Momentum
Used Electric Vehicles (14,800 searches, +517% YoY): The fastest-growing buying search, up +825% over six months.
EV Dealership (22,200 searches, about 25x YoY): A new kind of storefront people are looking for by name.
Chinese Electric Cars (18,100 searches, +22% YoY): Interest in Chinese EVs is up for the year but cooled sharply this summer.
UAW (27,100 searches, +50% YoY): Union news is up +83% over three months.
Rotating Car Seat (33,100 searches, +22% YoY): A family-car accessory up +49% over six months.

Summary
Car search in 2026 rewards the specific. The biggest numbers belong to two-wheelers, led by electric bike at 1,830,000 monthly searches and e scooter at 823,000. The fastest growth belongs to named models and services: rivian r2 at +235%, the kia ev3 and bmw ix3 at +309%, and tesla cybercab at roughly 20x. Generic terms like electric vehicles and electric cars are shrinking even as the cars they describe sell.
The clearest patterns in auto and car trends this year:
Two wheels first: E-bikes and scooters out-search every car on the page, with price-first terms close behind
Models over categories: People search the R2, EV3 and iX3, not "EVs"
Cheaper chemistry: LFP and sodium-ion battery searches are rising as budget EVs arrive
Driverless is real: Robotaxi and autopilot searches grow fastest, while flying cars hold steady
Second-hand electric: Used EV searches are up +517% as lease returns hit the market
