
Every so often the Rising Trends database throws up a number so violent it looks like a data error. This is one of those. The term "bemotrizinol" sat between 320 and 1,900 monthly US searches for fourteen straight months. In June 2026 it printed 60,500.
Let's be precise about what that is, because the honesty matters more than the headline: that is one month at that level. One data point. Not a compounding curve, not a six-month ramp, not a behavior shift we watched build. A regulatory decision landed on June 9, an entire news cycle happened, and a chemical name that almost nobody could pronounce became a search term overnight. Our own 3-month growth figure of +4,554% is arithmetically true and analytically misleading, because it is measuring a cliff, not a slope.
What makes it worth writing about anyway is what caused the cliff. The FDA added a new active ingredient to the over-the-counter sunscreen monograph for the first time since the late 1990s. That is a genuinely rare category event, and unlike most viral search spikes, this one has a paper trail with docket numbers. So below: what bemotrizinol is, what the FDA actually signed, why the US spent a quarter century behind Europe on this, and what has to happen before it shows up in a bottle you can buy.

Thirteen of those fourteen bars are effectively invisible, and that is the honest reading of this chart. Bemotrizinol was a niche ingredient-nerd query with a ceiling under 2,000 searches a month for the entire period we can measure at monthly resolution.
There is one detail worth pausing on, though. December 2025 prints 4,400 — nearly 14x the 320 searches in November. That is not noise. The FDA published its proposed order on December 12, 2025 and opened comments through January 26, 2026. The proposed order produced a blip; the final order produced the cliff. That is a useful calibration on how much of the June number is durable interest versus news reflex, and the December bar suggests the answer is "some, but not most."

Two things stand out. First, bemotrizinol arrived at roughly 55% of the volume of the biggest established sunscreen brand term in our data (Blue Lizard, at 110,000) without a single product on a US shelf. Second, the five regulation-driven terms all moved in the same month and in the same direction: bemotrizinol, "bemotrizinol sunscreen," "new sunscreen," "fda-approved sunscreens," and "fda sunscreen" went from a combined 4,720 monthly searches in May to 146,600 in June — a 31x jump. When five separate queries with different phrasings spike simultaneously in one month, that is the fingerprint of a news event, not of accumulating consumer intent. Whether it converts into the second is the open question, and we will not know until Q4 data.
What bemotrizinol actually is
Bemotrizinol, INCI name bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine and usually abbreviated BEMT, is an organic (so-called chemical) UV filter that has been in commercial sunscreens outside the US since around 2000. It is sold under trade names including Tinosorb S and, by the company that filed with the FDA, PARSOL Shield. Worth flagging because people mix them up constantly: bemotrizinol is not the same molecule as bisoctrizole, its particulate cousin.
Three properties are what everyone actually cares about.
It is broad-spectrum in a single molecule. BEMT absorbs across both UVB and UVA, including the longer UVA-1 wavelengths. That matters because, per the Skin Cancer Foundation, UVA accounts for up to 95 percent of the UV radiation reaching the earth, travels deeper into the skin than UVB, and passes straight through window glass. SPF, the number on the front of the bottle, is a UVB measurement. UVA protection is the part US formulators have historically had the fewest tools for.
It is photostable, and it stabilizes other filters. This is the property with the oldest evidence base. A 2001 study in Photochemistry and Photobiology by Chatelain and Gabard showed that BEMT prevented the photodegradation of avobenzone in a concentration-dependent way, sustaining both SPF and the UVA ratio after irradiation at doses up to 30 minimal erythemal doses, and did the same for ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. Avobenzone is the workhorse UVA filter in American sunscreens and it falls apart in sunlight unless something props it up. Bemotrizinol props it up.
It barely gets into you. The FDA's modern GRASE framework requires a Maximal Usage Trial, which is the reason so many older filters got stuck. A 2023 evaluation in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology reported that in an in vitro permeation test and pilot MUsT for 6% BEMT, plasma concentrations rarely exceeded the FDA's 0.5 ng/mL threshold, with no evidence of accumulation. The same paper contains the sentence that explains this entire article: Europe has 30-plus approved UV filters, the US has about 10.
Why the US spent 25 years behind Europe
The reason is regulatory category, not chemistry. In the EU and most of Asia, sunscreens are cosmetics. In the US, sunscreens are over-the-counter drugs. A new UV filter here is not a new cosmetic ingredient; it is a new drug active, and it has to clear a drug pathway.
For decades that pathway barely functioned. Ingredients could be nominated through the Time and Extent Application route, and Congress tried to unclog it with the Sunscreen Innovation Act, enacted November 26, 2014, which added statutory timeframes on top of the TEA regulation. It did not deliver a single new filter. The FDA reviewed the pending requests and tentatively concluded the ingredients were not GRASE — not because they were judged unsafe, but because the submitted data were insufficient under modern standards. Then the SIA was overtaken entirely: as FDA's own page on the law states, the CARES Act of March 27, 2020 reformed the OTC drug review process under section 505G and sunsetted the Sunscreen Innovation Act at the end of fiscal year 2022.
That replacement is the thing that actually worked. Section 505G created the OTC Monograph Order Request, a fee-funded route with defined review clocks. On September 23, 2024, DSM Nutritional Products LLC filed a Tier 1 OMOR asking the FDA to find bemotrizinol GRASE at up to 6 percent — the first-ever Tier 1 request of its kind. Proposed order December 12, 2025. Final order June 2026. Roughly 20 months end to end for a molecule that had been stuck for twenty years.
What the FDA actually signed
This is the fact worth getting exactly right, because the two definitions in our own database disagreed about it and plenty of coverage is vague.
On June 9, 2026 the FDA announced that it had added bemotrizinol to the list of permitted sunscreen active ingredients, calling it the first new active ingredient added to the OTC sunscreen monograph since the late 1990s and the first new active added to any OTC monograph under the CARES Act process. The agency finalized within seven months of the proposed order. The notice of availability was published in the Federal Register the next day as 91 FR 35220, Docket No. FDA-2025-N-6494.
The details in Final Administrative Order OTC000039 are where the practical constraints live:
- Concentration is capped at 6 percent, which FDA reads as up to and including 6 percent.
- GRASE for adults and children 6 months of age and older.
- Permitted dosage forms are oil, lotion, cream, gel, butter, paste, ointment, stick, and spray — with sprays required to have no propellant, or a delivery system in which the propellant never contacts the formulation.
- The finished product must deliver a minimum SPF of at least 2 under the monograph test procedures. That is a floor for legal marketing, not a performance claim.
- The order takes effect on August 9, 2026, not on the announcement date.
- Under section 505G(b)(5)(C)(i), the order authorizes solely DSM Nutritional Products LLC and its licensees, assignees or successors to market products incorporating it, and that exclusivity runs 18 months from the date DSM may lawfully begin.
The supplier's own framing is worth reading alongside it. dsm-firmenich says the submission was backed by clinical studies in nearly 500 participants selected to represent the diversity of the US population, and pitches formulation flexibility at low use levels — which, translated, means lighter textures.
What it changes for the sunscreen you buy
Not immediately, and not by itself.
The most credible near-term effect is cosmetic elegance rather than raw protection. A photostable broad-spectrum filter that works at low percentages lets formulators cut the total active load, which is what produces the thin, fast-absorbing, non-greasy finishes people have been importing from Seoul and Sydney for a decade. Our own data shows exactly how much appetite exists for that: seven Korean sunscreen terms we track — innisfree, Anua, Beauty of Joseon tinted, Abib stick, COSRX, Haruharu Wonder and Skin1004 Centella — add up to 103,100 monthly US searches. Americans have been solving the texture problem by buying around the US formulary.
The second effect is on UVA. In a perspective published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology in April 2026, Wang, Osterwalder and Lim called the pending approval a potential turning point for US sunscreen formulation — the framing being that a single ingredient changes what the rest of the formula can be built around, not that it single-handedly raises protection.
And it will not settle the mineral-versus-chemical argument. Bemotrizinol is an organic filter. The mineral cluster in our database — tinted mineral sunscreen at 18,100, best mineral sunscreen for face at 8,100, mineral sunscreen stick at 2,900 and two smaller terms — is worth about 29,700 monthly searches on its own, and "ewg sunscreen" at 9,900 is up 1,025% over six months. That audience is not shopping for a new chemical filter.
The caveats worth stating plainly
It is not hypoallergenic. A 2024 case report in Contact Dermatitis documented allergic contact dermatitis to BEMT in a sunscreen and asked directly whether it is an emerging allergen. Rare, but real, and the honest expectation is that reports rise as US exposure rises.
One filter is not thirty. The US formulary goes from roughly ten actives to roughly eleven. The larger proposed order that would rewrite the sunscreen monograph's underlying GRASE conditions, issued back in September 2021, is still not final — and if it is ever finalized, bemotrizinol products would have to meet those conditions too.
Approval is not availability. Effective date August 9, 2026, then reformulation, SPF and broad-spectrum testing, stability and packaging work, and a supply agreement with a single authorized supplier for the first 18 months. Nobody reformulates a portfolio in a quarter.
And 60,500 is one month. We are reporting it because it is what our data says, not because one month establishes a trend.
Where this is heading
The number to watch is not June. It is October through December 2026. If "bemotrizinol" settles in the 5,000 to 15,000 range, this was a real category shift with a news spike on top, and the search interest converts into shopping behavior as the first products get announced. If it decays back toward 2,000, June was a headline and nothing more. Our December 2025 bar — a 4,400 spike that fell straight back to 1,300 the following month — is the base rate to beat, and it argues for caution.
On products: with the order effective August 9 and exclusivity attached to one supplier, the realistic window for the first US bemotrizinol sunscreens on shelves is late 2026 into 2027, most likely from brands with existing dsm-firmenich relationships. Expect the marketing to lean hard on "the new FDA-approved filter" long before most consumers know what it does, and expect a wave of comparison content that our "new sunscreen" term at 12,100 is already anticipating.
The bigger story is procedural, and it is the one the industry is actually watching. The Tier 1 OMOR route worked, on a defined clock, for a filter that the previous system failed to move for two decades. That precedent is worth more than the molecule. If other filter owners conclude the pathway is now navigable, the interesting search curves in 2027 will belong to chemical names Americans have never had to learn — and the twenty-five-year gap between a US sunscreen aisle and a European one starts closing for real rather than one ingredient at a time.
