
Two years ago, the internet had a name for this: the salmon sperm facial. It spiked to 18,100 monthly US searches in July 2024, got a second spike in March 2025, and has been falling apart ever since. It is down 70% year over year and now sits at 1,600 searches a month.
The treatment did not go away. The name did. In the Rising Trends database, the clinical term for the same molecule, PDRN, went from 2,900 monthly searches in July 2024 to 60,500 in June 2026 — up 234% in the last twelve months and 2,421% over two years. And it is not travelling alone. PDRN serum, PDRN skincare, and a stack of brand queries are all breaking out at the same time.
That is a specific and readable pattern. Search behavior moved from the shock headline to the ingredient, the product format, and the brand. Categories do that when they stop being a novelty and start being something people actually buy. Below is what PDRN is, what the peer-reviewed literature genuinely supports, the one distinction that most coverage gets wrong, and why the rival regenerative buzzword went the opposite direction.

Note the shape. This is not a spike. Spikes look like "salmon sperm facial" did in July 2024: a vertical wall, then a collapse. PDRN is a stepped climb with seasonal dips, doubling roughly every seven months for two years straight. The three-month growth rate is currently 0%, which sounds like bad news until you notice it means the term is holding a level it reached by multiplying twenty-one-fold.
The more interesting picture is what happens when you put the whole cluster on one chart. Because the risers and the fallers are describing the exact same molecule.

Look at the top and bottom of that chart together. "Salmon sperm facial" and "pdrn" are the same treatment. One is down 70%, the other is up 234%. The vocabulary flipped from the gross-out headline to the pharmacological name, and the traffic followed. That is what a category maturing looks like in search data: novelty terms decay, ingredient terms compound, and brand terms appear underneath them. Anua PDRN went from literally zero searches in mid-2024 to 12,100 a month — a brand query that did not exist two years ago is now as big as the whole treatment category was at its peak.
What PDRN actually is
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is a mixture of purified DNA fragments, extracted and sterilized from the milt (sperm) of salmon or trout. The salmon part is not marketing whimsy — salmon DNA is used because it is cheap, abundant as a fishing byproduct, and about 96% homologous with human DNA, which lowers the immunogenic risk.
According to a review of PDRN pharmacology in Frontiers in Pharmacology, the fragments run 50 to 1,500 kDa, with most mass concentrated between 80 and 200 kDa. The proposed mechanism has two halves. First, PDRN acts as an agonist at the adenosine A2A receptor, which downregulates pro-inflammatory cytokines and upregulates VEGF, driving angiogenesis and fibroblast activity. Second, the fragments feed the nucleotide salvage pathway: cells in damaged or hypoxic tissue can recycle the supplied bases and nucleosides rather than synthesizing them from scratch, which is metabolically expensive exactly when a cell can least afford it.
There is a related molecule you will see in clinic marketing: polynucleotide, or PN. A 2025 comparison in Pharmaceutics describes PN as the longer-chain, higher-molecular-weight cousin of PDRN — more viscous, forming a porous three-dimensional hydrogel that acts partly as a scaffold and hydrating agent, and requiring a lower-gauge needle to inject. PDRN is shorter, more fluid, and leans harder on the A2A receptor route. Rejuran-type "skin boosters" are PN products. Most serums say PDRN. They are cousins, not synonyms, and the evidence for each is not interchangeable.
What the evidence actually shows
This is where you need to be careful, because the strong evidence and the popular claims are about different things.
The well-supported use of PDRN is tissue repair, mostly by injection, mostly in medicine rather than cosmetics. The Frontiers review covers diabetic foot ulcers, venous and pressure ulcers, skin graft donor sites, and corneal epithelial repair, with a safety record drawn from post-marketing surveillance of more than 300,000 prescriptions. The clinical trial literature reflects the same bias toward injected, medical indications: a completed Korean Phase 4 trial registered on ClinicalTrials.gov randomized 79 rotator cuff repair patients to PDRN injections or saline after surgery. That is the world PDRN comes from — orthopedics, wound care, ophthalmology.
The aesthetic evidence is thinner but real, and it is also injectable. The pivotal study for the skin booster category is a Phase III trial published in the Journal of Korean Medical Science in 2014 comparing a polynucleotide filler against a hyaluronic acid filler for crow's feet in 72 patients. It found 95.7% improvement in the polynucleotide group versus 94.3% for HA, with fewer local adverse events (31.9% versus 48.6%). More recently, a 2026 prospective observational study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology followed 42 patients receiving intradermal polynucleotide injections for periorbital wrinkles and reported significant improvement in lower eyelid and crow's feet ratings with minimal adverse events — while explicitly calling for controlled comparative studies to confirm it.
A 2026 narrative review in Cureus on PDRN in post-procedure aesthetic recovery is the fairest summary of where the field sits. It concludes PDRN is a reasonable adjunct after laser resurfacing or microneedling, and then lists the caveats plainly: few randomized controlled trials in aesthetic cohorts, small samples, inconsistent formulations, and almost no long-term follow-up.
So: promising, mechanistically coherent, decent safety record, weak on large randomized trials. That is a normal place for an ingredient to be. It is not the same thing as proven.
The topical problem nobody wants to talk about
Here is the distinction that most PDRN coverage skips, and it is the single most useful thing to understand about this trend.
Every study above involves a needle. The 27,100 people a month searching "pdrn serum" are buying something you rub on your face. Those are not the same intervention, and the gap between them is a physical one.
A 2025 paper in Pharmaceutics on plasma-engineered PDRN states the problem in about as blunt a form as a journal allows. PDRN fragments are 50 to 1,500 kDa, and the authors note that efficient passive skin permeation is generally limited to molecules under 500 Da. On top of the size problem, native PDRN carries a strongly negative surface charge (they measured roughly -41 mV), and nucleic acids are poorly taken up by cells precisely because they are large, negatively charged, and hydrophilic. Their conclusion is that "unmodified PDRN is suboptimal as a cosmetic active ingredient," and that reducing its size or modulating its charge is required for effective delivery.
That is a paper written by people trying to make topical PDRN work, saying the plain version does not.
This does not mean PDRN serums do nothing. They are typically formulated with hyaluronic acid, panthenol, peptides, and humectants that hydrate and support the barrier on their own — which is why "pdrn hyaluronic acid" is its own search term, up 929% year over year. It also does not mean the problem is unsolvable; nano-sizing, charge modulation, encapsulation, and shorter-fragment sourcing are all active research directions. What it means is that if a serum's claims rest on injectable PDRN studies, the claim has outrun the delivery. Ask what the brand's own topical data shows. Most of the good ones now run their own instrumental measurements rather than pointing at the wound-healing literature.
Where the regulators stand
Two different regulatory worlds, and confusing them is how people get hurt.
Injectables. In the United States, no polynucleotide or PDRN injectable is FDA-approved as a dermal filler or skin booster. FDA-approved dermal filler materials are hyaluronic acid, collagen, calcium hydroxylapatite, poly-L-lactic acid, and polymethylmethacrylate beads. Salmon-derived polynucleotides are not on that list. Products imported and injected in US clinics are being used outside the approval pathway, with no federal verification of sterility, potency, or content. In South Korea, by contrast, PN skin boosters have been through the MFDS approval process and have been on the market since the mid-2010s, which is why the clinical experience and most of the published data are Korean.
Topicals. Cosmetics in the US are regulated, but they are not approved before going on sale — that is true of every serum on the shelf, not a PDRN-specific loophole. The line that matters is intended use: the moment a product claims to treat, repair, or restructure tissue rather than beautify, it is making a drug claim regardless of what the label calls it.
Practical version: a PDRN serum you buy online is legal and low-risk. A PDRN or polynucleotide injection offered at a US medspa is neither approved nor supply-chain verified, whatever the clinic's website implies.
The K-beauty pipeline: Anua, Rejuran, and the vegan pivot
The commercial story here is a textbook version of the K-beauty pipeline: an ingredient gets established in Korean clinics and pharmacies, drifts into cosmeceuticals, and then arrives in US mass retail as a hero ingredient with clinical credentials attached.
Rejuran is the clinic end. Its US-facing consumer product, the Rejuran Turnover Ampoule, is at 12,100 monthly searches, up 175% year over year, and up 83% in the last three months alone — the fastest short-term acceleration of any term in our cluster, with a striking 18,100 spike in April 2026. That is a clinic brand successfully converting into a shelf brand.
Anua is the mass end, and it is the sharpest growth story in the dataset. "Anua pdrn" recorded zero searches in July and August 2024, 140 in September 2024, and 12,100 in June 2026 — up 1,581% year over year. Not every brand riding the wave is winning, though. "Genabelle pdrn" peaked at 2,900 in May 2025 and is now at 880, down 63%. The ingredient is compounding; individual brands are still very much fighting over it.
Then there is the substitution wave, which is the most interesting commercial signal. "Vegan pdrn" is up 529% year over year and "plant-based pdrn" is up 175%, both from tiny bases. This is partly ethics and partly supply: salmon milt is seasonal, expensive, and awkward to scale. Research is already moving. A 2025 paper in Current Issues in Molecular Biology reported the first PDRN derived from a microbial source, extracted from Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Notably, the bacterial fragments came in under 100 base pairs versus 200 to 800 for salmon-derived PDRN — smaller, which is exactly the direction the topical delivery problem demands — and outperformed salmon PDRN on antioxidant activity and cell migration in their assays. If a non-salmon, smaller-fragment PDRN scales, it solves the sustainability complaint and the penetration complaint in one move.
Why exosomes went the other way
The useful control group for all of this is exosomes, the other regenerative buzzword that was supposed to own 2025. "Exosome skincare" peaked at 8,100 monthly searches in March 2025 and is now at 1,600, down 70% year over year. "Exosome treatment" is down 46%, "exosome serum" down 33%. Same category, same promise, opposite trajectory.
A 2026 narrative review in Biomedicines on exosome-based therapeutics in dermatology explains why. The FDA has stated that no exosome products are approved and treats anything promoted therapeutically as an unapproved drug or biologic, with warning letters issued to clinics and suppliers. The evidence base is mostly small, single-center, uncontrolled studies with short follow-up and high risk of bias; the only triple-blind randomized trial the review identifies showed no advantage over saline. And there is no agreed reference preparation, so two products labelled "exosome" may share almost nothing.
PDRN's evidence base is imperfect, but it has a defined molecule, a defined mechanism, a measurable molecular weight range, decades of pharmacovigilance, and a national regulator that has approved it. Exosomes have none of that consistency. When a category cannot standardize, consumer interest eventually gives up on it — and the search curve is what giving up looks like.
Where this is heading
The name will keep consolidating. "Salmon sperm facial" is on a glide path to irrelevance; the ingredient name and the product name have already won. Expect the shock framing to survive only in headlines, while purchase-intent traffic goes to "pdrn serum," "pdrn skincare," and brand queries. If you are publishing about this, the meme keyword is a declining asset.
Topical efficacy is the fight of the next 18 months. The delivery problem is now well documented in the literature, and the smart formulators know it. Watch for low-molecular-weight and microbial-sourced PDRN, encapsulation systems, and — the real tell — brands publishing their own topical instrumental data instead of citing injectable wound-healing trials. Whoever gets there first gets to make claims nobody else can.
The injectable side stays a grey market in the US until somebody funds the trials. Nothing changes the FDA position except a sponsor running registration-grade studies. Until then, American demand keeps flowing to topicals and to medical tourism, and US clinics offering PN injections keep operating outside the approval pathway.
Watch "vegan pdrn." It is at 880 searches a month, which is nothing. But it has the same shape "pdrn" had in early 2024: near-zero base, triple-digit growth, and a real supply-side reason to exist. Ingredient trends almost always announce themselves at this volume first.
The broader lesson is the one the chart makes obvious. When a trend's novelty term collapses while its technical term compounds, the trend is not dying. It is graduating from something people gawk at into something people buy — and the second phase is always the bigger one.
