Everyone wants their own AI now π₯οΈ
GM. This is Rising Trends, the newsletter that reads America's Google searches so you don't have to.
And this week, America decided it doesn't want to rent its AI anymore. It wants one at home, next to the router.
Here's what we've got for you today:
π₯οΈ Trend of the Week: everyone wants their own AI now
π Trending in the Group Chat: a vibe-coded Beehiiv and PS5 games on your PC
π Site on the Rise: Flightradar, but for satellites
π± Breakout App: Duolingo for your ears
Trend of the Weekπ₯οΈ Everyone wants their own AI nowThe cloud is great until you read the bill ![]() Our algorithm picked this one up recently, and the chart basically fell off the top of the page. The scoreboard: searches for "local llm" went from 2,900 a month a year ago to 165,000 now. Three months ago it was 8,100. It peaked at 246,000 in August. And the whole family moved with it. "Local ai" went from 2,400 to 18,100 in a year. "Self hosted ai" went from 480 to 12,100. Ollama, a free app for running these models, went from 90,500 to 135,000. LM Studio, its rival, from 40,500 to 74,000. People aren't asking what AI can do anymore. They're asking how much of it fits on their desk. Wait, what's a local LLM? In plain English: the same kind of AI model that powers ChatGPT, but running on your own computer instead of someone else's server. No monthly bill, no rate limits, and your files never leave the room. The catch: these models eat memory for breakfast. The bigger the model, the more RAM or graphics card memory you need, and that's where it gets expensive. Why now? 1. Agents need a box that never sleeps. OpenClaw, the open-source AI agent, gets 74,000 searches a month. A year ago it was basically zero. People want it running 24/7 on something small and cheap, and the Mac mini became the default: searches for "mac mini" are at 246,000 a month, up from 135,000 a year ago. It didn't stay cheap: the new Mac mini that started shipping September 22 begins at $899, up from $599 for the last one, and refurbished stock is very limited. 2. The free models got good. Alibaba's Qwen3.8-27B landed in August under an open license and was downloaded 7.6 million times in a month. It's small enough at 4-bit to run on a single 24GB gaming GPU. That's the month "local llm" searches went from 74,000 to 246,000. Not a coincidence. 3. AI ate the RAM. Memory makers are pointing their factories at AI data centers, and the rest of us get the leftovers. Last week, Tom's Hardware reported that 32GB of fast DDR5 now costs $450, calling it the shortage's "worst milestone yet." Searches for "ram shortage" are at 4,400 a month, up from 20 a year ago. Nothing makes people want to own something like being told it's running out. Who's making money
So what happens next?
π‘ My take: the cloud isn't going anywhere, but "my AI runs on my desk" is the new "I own my domain." Don't build the model. Sell the setup. |
The Pro Moveβ‘ Catch the next Mac miniLocal AI was one trend. There are 50,000 more niche ones. Pro has every one of them, each with its search history, plus 25,000+ websites and apps on the rise. "local llm" was at 8,100 searches three months ago. That's when you want to see it. |
Trending in the Group Chatπ Vibe-coded Beehiiv and PS5 on PCWhat the internet argued about, starred and installed this week π¦ The tweet: Marc Lou announced MailCheap: "I vibe-coded beehiiv, and it's 83% cheaper." It's an open-source newsletter tool you can run for free, or from $19 a month, and you pay for emails sent, not dormant subscribers. 1.2M views and 3.7K likes. π The repo: AnyPS5 converts PS5 game files so they run natively on Windows and Linux. No emulator: it rewrites the game itself, and it does it in your browser. It doesnβt ship any games or Sony files; you bring your own, and the legal side is on you. Launched in August, 45.2k stars, +12,400 this week. Sonyβs lawyers have entered the chat. π§ The skill: diagram-design teaches your coding agent to draw diagrams that don't look like 2009 clip art: 44 types, each one a single HTML + SVG file in your brand colors. 58.5k stars, +6,600 this week. Your architecture is still a mess, but now it's a beautiful mess. π¬ The tool: VoiceStudio calls itself a fully local ElevenLabs alternative: voice cloning, dubbing, dictation, transcription and audiobooks, running on your own machine. 77.7k stars, +17,300 this week. Your podcast can now have a guest who never agreed to be on it. Please don't. |
